The scene depicts a marshy oxbow lake in the freshwater wetland of the former foreland basin north of the Alps with evergreen to deciduous subtropical forests, reed belts, and open floodplains. In the foreground on the left the prehistoric rhinoceros Prosantorhinus is wallowing, on the right two individuals of the equine related clawed animal Metaschizotherium sit and in the background mother and young of the hornless rhinoceros Plesiaceratherium can be seen.
