Saber-Toothed Cat

Smilodon fatalis californicus

Quaternary: Pleistocene: Late Pleistocene, between 25.000 and 12.000  years old
Rancho La Brea, Los Angeles, California, USA

Saber-toothed cats were an almost worldwide occurring group of cats in earlier geological history, which produced a great diversity of species and became extinct at the end of the ice age. Both body size and the namesake saber-like elongated canines varied from species to species, with the genus Smilodon having the most imposing saber teeth.
